Awakening the Senses: The Benefits of Massage for Seniors
At Canyon Creek, our program is designed to nurture the
emotional and physical wellbeing of our senior residents. From brain games and
art projects, to visits with pets and special outings around Salt Lake City, UT
and the surrounding areas, our activities are diverse and engaging.
For individuals facing issues related to memory loss,
Alzheimer’s, and related dementias, special care is needed to protect against
depression, confusion, or loneliness. That’s why the activities we plan for our
are designed to awaken the senses, trigger positive
memories, promote social bonding, and increase body awareness. Among the
regularly-scheduled activities at Canyon Creek are hand massage sessions. What
are the therapeutic benefits of hand massages, and why are they particular
beneficial for seniors?
As we age, we become more and more prone to inflammation,
stiffness, and reduced circulation. Hand massages help improve our range of
motion, reducing pain and improving blood flow.
The pain-reducing benefits of hand massage are particularly
beneficial for our senior residents suffering from arthritic pain. However,
even if the source of physical pain is not arthritic in nature, there are a
vast number of pressure points on our hands that be accessed as a way to heal
pain and inflammation in other parts of the body. Generally referred to as hand
this massage technique is believed to stimulate energy and circulation to
organs and tissues, promoting healing.
Seniors who are experiencing the memory loss associated with
Alzheimer’s or other related dementias are particularly vulnerable to
developing feelings of confusion and anxiety. Hand massages are designed to
promote relaxation. Through the sensory-awakening experience of hand massage,
residents become more aware of their bodies, reducing feelings of
disorientation or confusion.
In one study,
surgery patients who had their hands held and gently massaged reported less
anxiety compared to a control group. In this
study, residents of
senior living communities who received regular hand massages were reported to
exhibit less agitated behavior. Our staff and residents, too, can attest to the
healing and anxiety-reducing benefits of hand massage.
