Music as Medicine for Seniors
Ah, the power of music. Have you ever been in a bad mood, but then listened to one of your favorite songs on the radio and felt a million times better? Or, have you ever seen a live concert and been moved to tears? Whether you’ve loved singing, listening to your favorite band, or hearing a good song on the radio, we’ve all experienced the amazing power of music.
Music can bring back wonderful memories, lift our spirits, inspire us to dance, and transform our moods. Considering all this, it’s no wonder we make music a central part of our activities programming here at Canyon Creek Senior Living. In this month’s edition of our community blog, we’ll be discussing how music can benefit seniors and the kinds of musical activities we plan each month.
Music and Memory
Stevie Wonder once said, “Music, at its essence, is what gives us memories. And the longer a song has existed in our lives, the more memories we have of it.”
As a part of our memory care program, we organize activities that are designed to trigger the senses and happy memories. Familiar songs and beautiful harmonies can bring great joy to seniors facing dementia. Even if they may not remember all the lyrics, they often remember the tune, bringing back happy memories and soothing their moods.
Soothing Melodies Heal
When we were babies, our parents often sang soothing lullabies to help us drift off to sleep or to calm down if we were feeling anxious. For our entire lives, really, music has been used to help us feel better. As we age, we may begin to feel the resurgence of uncomfortable emotions like nostalgia, loneliness, or anxiety. For aging adults, music can be a kind of lullaby, helping them feel happier, more at ease, and more connected to the world around them.
Musical Activities at Canyon Creek
We incorporate music into many of our activities here at Canyon Creek. If one of our favorite musicians’ birthday is coming up, like Elvis, we plan a party around it. Several times a month, we invite musicians to perform for our residents. Whether it’s fiddlers or a Heart and Soul performance, music lifts our spirits and keeps us smiling!
