On Gratitude and the Power of Celebration
“For each new morning
with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
M.J. Ryan said, “Whenever we are appreciative, we are filled with a sense of well-being and swept up by the feeling of joy.” And it’s true: gratitude is essential to leading a full, happy life. With gratitude, we can pull ourselves away from feelings of regret or loss and instead celebrate the beauty of all that we do have. At Canyon Creek Senior Living, we truly believe in the uplifting power of gratitude. In fact, we believe in its power so much that we turn every single day into a celebration!
Why Celebrate? The Power of Gratitude
Psychological research has shown a direct link between gratitude and greater happiness. When we free ourselves of envy and negative thinking, actively recognizing all that we are grateful for, our mood improves. Beyond an improved mood, adopting an attitude of gratitude can have wide-ranging benefits, from improved sleep, to better relationships, to increased physical health and immunity!
How We Cultivate Gratitude
At Canyon Creek Senior Living, we cultivate gratitude by making every day into a celebration. Whether it’s National Grilled Cheese Day, Crazy Hat Day, a senior resident’s birthday, or a national holiday, there’s always an occasion to recognize – and celebrate! – what we’re thankful for. We may turn our celebrations into a party, or we may celebrate in a way that’s more personal, like getting together to actively give each other compliments.
Celebrations Program: Daily Activities, Daily Fun
Take what may seem like an average Thursday in September. It’s not a national holiday, but it’s a day to be grateful for! So what do we do?
In assisted living, we’ll start the day off by getting together to watch the news. This is followed by group exercise and some fun and intellectually stimulating brain games. We’ll share a wonderful home-cooked meal together, and after lunch, it’s time to celebrate! All residents born in the month of September get a big party—family and friends invited. Then, just before the sun goes down, we’ll take a stroll by the creek, basking in the natural beauty that surrounds us. As we start to unwind for the day, we get excited for all that the next day holds for us: a trip to a local farm, a community happy hour, and bingo!
And that’s just the itinerary for one average day in September. Every day is different, and every day is special. Whether you want to celebrate your love of poetry, a good book, a movie, or cooking, we have something planned for everyone!
To get an idea of all of the other ways we celebrate, learn about our activities program and take a look at a recent activities calendar. The days are full of fun activities that are designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit—all while keeping us connected to our friends and loved ones. Friends, family, or prospective residents are always invited to come see for themselves, so if you’re interested in experiencing one of our activities or events firsthand, just let us know!
How Can You Cultivate a Practice of Gratitude?
There are so many different ways to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. You might want to try keeping a daily journal. Every day, before you go to bed, jot down three things you’re grateful for. Or, you might want to make a point to personally thank someone every week—whether it’s a thank you note, e-mail, or a phone call, these acts of kindness and expressions of appreciation can have a powerful impact on you and the people in your life!
And to close things out: What are you grateful for today? Write it down, share it, and celebrate it!
